Google Sued by US Gov.

I linked to digg because the comments there are worth reading...well, some of them.

Google is being sued for not giving up it's search histories. The Justice Dept wants the search histories so that child pornography can be more easily prosecuted.

You might think it's nothing. It's just search histories. It's not what their asking for. It's HOW their asking it. They threaten companies with subpoenas to do what they want. This is just wrong. And it's Google their suing. Google, for christ's sake. Google is the Transcontinental Railroad of the 21st Century. Google, among a handful of other American companies, is one of the few remaining things Americans can feel pride at. An American need only look at their logo and say, dammit, that's progress. And the Justice Dept has the gaul to sue Google? Because their protecting the people?

Bullshit. The last time something like this happened, it was the McCarthy Era, and many people, companies, institutions were destroyed or blacklisted just because they didn't kowtow along. This isn't the Cold War. We must not suffer yet another Red Scare.

If Ever There was a Time to Care about Something Other than Yourself, it is Now, Here, and This.

Email your representatives

Dear X,
Please impeach Alberto Gonzales, Attorney General of the Department of Justice. His use of the subpoena as a tool for forcing companies to comply is nothing short of blackmail. I refer to Gonzales vs. Google inc
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=arCWSKEPoJaE&refer=top_world_news) This is a misuse of power, and unconstitutional. There is absolutely no reason a subpoena is needed. What's the point of asking someone for help if they can't say no?
This is not the way to go about things. Not by threats and scares. Not by McCarthyism.

Sincerely,
Concered Citizen

The House of Representatives can impeach federal officials. Get your church to do it. Or your student union. Or just email it yourself. Just do something.

How I use Google Desktop?

1. Have Computer in all rooms of House.
2. Have Podcasts across several computers.
3. Downloads 1/07/05 in Bed Computer
4. Downloaded 1/o8/05 in Kitchen Computer
5. Downloaded 1/09/05 in Living Room PC

Google Desktop indexes all my computers.
Google GDSuite takes the GDS index and allows me to do boolean on it.

It's like Apple's Spotlight across a network.

Cons: Memory Hog. Indexing is not instantaneous.

(My system is an AMD64 3000+ with 1 gig of ram and an x800xl. It's not top of the line but it's pretty damn good. Watching a vidcast on Itunes while doing a GDS search makes the CPU choke. I think i also have Azureus on. And a movie running on BSplayer. Still, GDS and Itunes and Azureus are the big culprits.) Posted by Picasa
